The Finnish Defense Forces (FDF) include the Army, Navy (includes Coastal Defense Forces and Air Force (Suomen Ilmavoimat). Finland requires compulsory national military and non-military service for males of 18 years of age for 6 to 12 months. A person may volunteer for service.
In 2008 there were 1,169,910 males age 16 to 49 available for military service and 1,121,187 females age 16 to 49. Of these, 962,479 males and 920,297 are considered fit to serve.
Approximately 33,784 males and 32,621 female reach the militarily significant age annually.
Transnational Issues
Various groups in Finland advocate restoration of Karelia and other areas ceded to the Soviet Union, but the Finnish Government asserts no territorial demands.
